Description

The History of Cinema in the UK

Conference at WPM University, Burgess Hill, 30th July 2029

Over the last three decades, our understanding of cinema as a historical phenomenon has been subject to a series of ‘turns’ – empirical, spatial, and computational, to name a few. This conference, organised by the Early Cinema in the UK research project in collaboration with the HoF Network (History of Film), will investigate the shifting positions and imperatives of cinema history and its relationships with other approaches and disciplines.

Some of the topics that will be covered include:

  • The place of cinema history in relation to other disciplines and research fields, such as geography or social history;
  • Archives, sources, and the consequences of digitisation for different types of cinematic heritage;
  • Non-metropolitan and non-theatrical exhibition studies as a historiographical challenge;

This event is free but attendees must register in advance. Travel assistance is available for community groups that would like to participate but lack financial resources to attend. Please contact Mike (mgreen1.wpm@gmail.com) as soon as possible as if you wish to apply for assistance as funds are limited.
